ACCOUNT CONTROL

Protect your digital presence

You’re one of a kind, and your Instagram should be too! Learn how to take charge of your account and report impersonators.

In-app reporting

In-app reporting is a crucial way you can prevent abuse on IG. Instagram uses community reports to make decisions on accounts, identify trends and inform our detection/enforcement models

  • If you believe an account is impersonating you, the best person to report it is you.
  • If someone you know is being impersonated, encourage them to report it using their own Instagram account.

Proactive protections

Instagram has systems that constantly monitor the platform for potential imposters of public figures and creators.

  • Our tools use a number of signals, scaled detection systems and community reports to identify potential imposter accounts. These accounts are immediately removed or flagged for further review.
  • To prevent bad actors, Instagram has also enabled a number of friction points throughout the app. For example, celebrities are required to share their ID to validate their identity, and fan accounts are marked with a specific label.

Meta Verified

Meta Verified requires a high proof of identity standard, such as a government ID, to prove who you are.

  • By subscribing to Meta Verified, not only will your account be verified as real, but you will have access to additional account protections and priority support for impersonation attempts.
  • Instagram is aware of high-profile instances of bad actors using Meta Verified to get verified as a celebrity account, but they are rebooting a triage system that will flag superstar public figure Meta Verified attempts for additional review.
