MASTERING SIGNALS

Push your posts to the top

Algorithms rely on signals. Creator @julienn.ag poses showing off his nails and bag.

We use signals to rank everything you see

Get the algorithm working for you. Each part of the app uses its own algorithm so we can best recommend content that we think audiences will love. Each algorithm relies on ‘signals’ like how likely a viewer will watch and engage with a piece of content to fuel recommendations. We have different recommendation systems for different surfaces like the Explore and Reels tab on Instagram. Engagement that takes place on each surface matters the most for that specific surface. If you’re interested in learning more about how we rank each surface, check out our blog post here.

As a creator, signals also affect how you show up

How often people see your content is based on what they like, comment on, and even how you tag or format posts. Try these tips to boost yours:

  • Create relatable and authentic content that pulls your viewers in the first three seconds.
  • Use the highest video resolution possible.
  • Tag a location and post in popular formats, like Reels.
  • Play to your audience and their niche. Consider using trending audio and trending hashtags on topics relevant to your audience but don't try to game the system. Irrelevant hashtags can cause your content's reach to suffer in the long run.
  • Invite people to engage with you or with other people in the comments section. Like or authentically reply to comments on your reel within the first seven days to generate more engagement.

Here are a few things to remember when posting

There’s no wrong way to post. But it doesn’t hurt to keep these watchouts in mind:

  • There are many factors that go into growing followers, the frequency you post new reels is just one factor of many, but we've found that when we look at creators with the greatest net follower growth rates we see, on average, they post 10 or more reels per month.
  • Be sure to post your content on Instagram at the same time as other platforms to protect against others resharing your content on IG and getting that distribution instead of you.
  • Try to post reels that are under 3 minutes, to ensure your reels are recommendable to new audiences.
  • Keep your content recommendable, don’t post content that violates our recommendation guidelines like engagement bait or misinformation.
  • Try to avoid recycling content from other apps. Stay clear of low resolution, unoriginal, horizontal and watermarked content as well.
  • Make sure to follow our Community Standards.
