What this new experience means for creators

How do I adjust my teen safety settings?

Teens under 16 will need their parent or guardian's permission to use less protective settings.

To get permission, teens under 16 will need to set up supervision on Instagram by sending a request to their parent or guardian. If a parent or guardian wants more oversight over their older teen's (16+) experiences, they are able to set up supervision.

How do I maintain a public presence as a creator?

As part of these new built-in protections, accounts for teen creators under 16 will be made private by default. For teen creators, we know that having a public account presence, and the flexibility of managing account settings to best fit individual needs, is important.

For teens and creators ages 13-15, they can choose to keep their account public with their parent or guardian’s approval by setting up supervision. They can send a request to their parent or guardian to approve that their account remains public, and/or adjust teen safety settings together to best fit their needs.

For teens and creators ages 16-17, if their account is already public, it will stay public, and if their account is already private, it will stay private. They can control whether their account is public or private, and they can change their teen safety settings themselves.

How do I allow outreach from brands?

We understand Direct Message (DM) is the primary method that brands use to connect with creators for potential brand partnerships.

In this new experience, by default, teens can only be messaged by people they follow or are already connected to.

Teen creators will be able to receive DMs from brands or people who they are not already following if they have adjusted their settings. They should check that their Messaging settings are adjusted within teen safety settings to allow inbound messages from people they don’t follow. Hidden Words will still filter out offensive words and phrases.

How do I maintain eligibility for content to be recommended?

Teen creators who choose to keep their account public, with the help of a parent or guardian if they are under 16, will continue to have their content included on surfaces like the Explore and Reels tabs, and their account & content will continue to be eligible to be recommended to people who don’t follow them.

Teen creators with private accounts will not be eligible for having their content recommended.

Setting up supervision

Supervision is a set of tools and insights designed to help parents and guardians support their teens on Instagram. Having them involved in approving your account to be public and approve changes to built-in teen safety settings will help you confidently make decisions together based on your needs as both a teen and a creator.

If you're under 16 years old, supervision is required if you want to make any changes to your teen safety settings.

You can set up supervision at any point in your teen safety settings.

Add a parent or guardian

What does supervision do?

When supervision is set up, your parent or guardian can:

  • Monitor your time on the app
  • See who you follow and who you’ve blocked
  • Receive notifications when you get new followers or update your settings
  • Make individual teen safety settings more protective for you

Your parent or guardian can't:

  • Post anything as you
  • See your search history or messages
  • Delete your account or reset your password

Who can supervise me?

Your parent or guardian must have an Instagram account and you must follow each other. If they don't have an existing Instagram account, you can send them an invite link via WhatsApp, text, email, etc. They will be prompted to create an Instagram account and then you will need to resubmit a request for them to supervise you.
