As a creator, it’s easy to get into a rhythm where most of the content you create is tied to what you’re already known for. But what happens when you get an itch to create somethingelse? And what if that something else is completely different from what your followers expect from you?

Meet Alayah Pilgrim (@alayahpilgrim), a 21-year-old footballer who’s gained close to half a million followers on Instagram by sharing snippets of her life, both on and off the pitch. We spoke to Alayah about how trial reels have helped her test creative ideas and connect with entirely new audiences.

How Alayah Pilgrim wins with Trial Reels

Just one of Alayah's trial reels gained her 60,000 followers and 5 million plays. Here are her top 3 tips:

How did you become a creator?

Female footballers don’t earn nearly as much as the guys, especially in your early years. So I saw Instagram as a chance to not only express myself creatively but as another income stream.

And once sponsorships started coming in, being a creator actually allowed me to focus more on football. Creating content had a huge influence on my professional journey.

How do you decide what to share with your audience?

It depends on my mood. It’s fun to hop on trends and mix it with my football life, like turning a tournament win into something creative or playing around with transitions.

I try to keep a good balance of sports and lifestyle, but sometimes I want to try a new content idea without worrying about how it will perform. Trial reels give me a way to validate my ideas before fully committing to them, and fine-tune my creative approach without the usual risk. I can share lifestyle content, even on match days, and post multiple times a day without spamming my community.

How has your trial reels strategy changed?

Now I experiment more with different editing styles. For example, posting a polished, cinematic version and seeing how it performs against something more raw and unfiltered.

Slow-motion football action shots tend to do great, so it makes sense to test variations of those.

Do your trial reels reach different audiences?

Yes, absolutely! Followers who find me through my trial reels come from totally different audiences.

If I want to connect with more of my Swiss audience, I can post a trial reel with a Swiss-German voiceover. Or I can reach people who are interested in my beauty and fashion content without overthinking how it will fit in with the rest of my profile.

The reach on trial reels has expanded my community in ways that organic feed posts didn’t always achieve. In less than 6 months, trial reels have helped me gain around 100,000 new followers.Just one reel alone got me 5 million plays and 60,000 followers.

Those fast growth moments still blow my mind. You really can get thousands of new followers overnight. It’s a bit surreal.

What’s your top aspiration?

As an athlete, my biggest goal is to stay healthy and play at the highest level for as long as possible. Getting to be a part of big tournaments like the WEURO or the Champions League — that’s the dream.

As a creator, to never lose the fun and joy of creating. I want to keep showing different sides of me and inspire more young girls who want to get into football.

Any advice for creators who are just starting out?

Don’t be afraid to experiment. Lots of creators, myself included, can feel hesitant to try new content styles because of fear around engagement drops or audience rejection.

If you’ve ever thought…

  • “I want to explore a new niche.”
  • “I want to test different video formats.”
  • “I wish I could reach a different audience.”

…then trial reels are the perfect tool for you.
