Manage unwanted interactions on Instagram
Creators deserve to have a safe, supportive experience on Instagram. That's why we're giving you more control over what appears on your profile and in your comments.
TUNE OUT BULLYING & HARASSMENT
Set boundaries on Instagram with tools that control what you see and who can interact with you
Hidden Words & advanced comment filtering
Protect yourself from unwanted comments and DMs by using Hidden Words. This is on by default to automatically hide comments that may contain profanity, bullying or spam.
You can hide even more unwanted comments with advanced comment filtering, which moves them into a separate section of hidden comments. This setting is on for creator accounts by default, but you can change it at any time. Comments from people you follow will not be hidden.
Create custom word lists to completely block specific words, emoji, or phrases from appearing in your comments or message requests. If a comment or message contains something on your list, it will be filtered out entirely and not visible to you or others, unless it's from someone you follow.
Limit interactions
Temporarily limit people’s ability to interact with you through messages, comments, tagging and more. You can choose to limit interactions from:
- People who aren’t following you
- People who followed you within the past week
- People not on your Close Friends list
You’re in control of how long you limit interactions for, and can change it at any time.
Limiting interactions does not impact your reach or visibility in Feed or the Explore tab.
To use these tools go to Settings > How others can interact with you > Limit interactions
Reachability settings
Customize how people interact with your account by using reachability settings. This feature allows you to control who can message, tag or comment on your posts.
Cut down on unwanted messages by changing who can send you message requests.
Control who can tag or @mention you, and choose who can comment on your posts.
Comments can only be turned off for individual posts, but Reachability Settings give you an extra layer of control on your overall account interactions.
To use these tools go to Settings > How others can interact with you > Messages and story replies, Tags and mentions or Comments
Report, block and restrict
Help us keep the community safe by reporting accounts, posts and comments you think go against our Community Standards. This includes things like bullying and harassment, hate speech, doxxing and more.
Report specific pieces of content to help our team spot exactly what’s violating the rules. For instance, for DMs you’d want to report the chat and not the account, otherwise our team won’t have access to the message in question.
Block them after you report to help keep yourself safe.
Use other moderation tools, such as:
- Restrict accounts to hide their comments and messages to you, and stop them from tagging, @mentioning, or replying to your stories
- Hide or delete individual comments that bother you
- Use the ellipsis in the top right corner of your comments to manage your comments in bulk
To use these tools:
- Long press on a comment or tap the ‘...’ menu on a piece of content and select Report, Block or Restrict
- Go to Settings > Who can see your content > Blocked
- Go to Settings > How others can interact with you > Restricted
Reduce spam
Stop spam and bot accounts from wasting your time. As a creator, you shouldn’t have to spend hours deleting irrelevant comments or removing fake accounts from your followers. Here are a few tools that can help:
Review and remove suspicious followers in one click. Visit your followers list to find a folder of suspected bots and other suspicious users.
Prevent unwanted followers by holding new requests from suspicious users in a review folder, then add, deny or block these accounts all at once. To opt out of this, visit your settings.
Filter suspected spam tags into a review folder. Approve, hide or remove them — it's up to you!
To use these tools:- Go to Settings > How others can interact with you > Follow and invite friends > Flag for review
- Go to your follower list > Scroll along the top to the ‘Flagged’ list
